MAN GIVES HIMSELF UP

Said to Have Used Revolver

POLICE SEARCH FOR NEIGHBOUR

A RESIDENT of College Road, Northcote, has been detained by the police, following a serious incident late last evening It is alleged that he pointed a loaded revolver at another man and pulled the trigger, but the revolver fortunately failed to explode.

The man at whom the revolver was pointed has disappeared, and has not been seen since last evening. Allegations have been made that he seriously assaulted the wife of the man who has been detained. The incident happened at about 11.30 o’clock last night. A search is being made for the man who has disappeared. The resident of College Road went to work yesterday morning, leaving his wife at home. Soon after he had gone ,hls wife noticed that he had not taken his working trousers, which he uses when working in a quarry. Four men live in a house nearby, and one of them' works in the same quarry with the woman’s husband. She noticed this man attending to his bicycle, and ran across to him with the trousers, and asked him to take them to her husband. According to a story which was told this morning, this man assaulted the woman after taking her into his house. When the husband returned in the evening, the woman told him what

had happened. It is alleged that he imnjediately obtained a revolver and went over to the house to see the man, but he had gone into the city. The husband, who is said to have a violent temper, left a message with others in the house, telling them to tell the man to come over and see him as soon as he returned. Apparently the man returned at about 11.30 o’clock, and went across in answer to the message. When he arrived there, it is stated that he was greeted by a revolver being pointed at him. It was dark at the time, and the husband took a wild aim. The revolver clicked, but did not explode, and the man ran for his life into the darkness. He has not been seen since, but a search is being made in order to obtain his side of the story. Meanwhile, the husband is being detained by the police, and it is understood that he has made a statement saying that he did intend to fire the revolver. It is expected that the man will appear in court later.
