INDUSTRIAL RABBITS AT EXHIBITION MANY FEATURES Industrial rabbits are to be exhibited for the first time on a comprehensive scale in New Zealand at the Auckland Winter Exhibition, which opens on July 3 in the Central Wharf sheds. frJ'HE entry of more than ninety in the rabbit section is considered remarkable in view of the fact that two important provincial shows are beingheld in the North Island at the time of the exhibition. The competitive secI tion for the rabbits will be held for three days from July 4, and after that the space will be used for exhibiting the animals. The total entries for the exhibition are now 2,2 65, an increase of over 400 on those of last year. The main increase is revealed in the home industries section. This section, with needlework, art and school displays, is receiving additional attention in the space allotted this year. following are entries, with last year’s figures in parentheses: Butter and cheese, 321 (369); honey, 17 (27); roots, vegetables and fruit, 144 (136); home industries, 460 (280); art and photographic, 223 (244); schools, 192 (9); district courts, 2 (2); needlework, 681 (722). In other classes, for which there are no comparative figures available, there are the following entries:—Industrial rabbits, 92; fretwork, 30; and bacon, 3. Entries for the exhibition are drawn from all parts of the Dominion, from Southland to Kaitaia in the North, and, in the needlework section, even from Australia. Liberal prizes, £ 5 for first, are being offered by the exhibition management in the baby championship. Announcements of the positions of the entrants will be made daily and the final result will be known after 9 p.m. on July 12. The winning babies will be required at the presentation of the prizes at 2.30 p.m. on July 13. Completition of the exhibition buildings is now practically accomplished and today, hundreds of workers were engaged in construction. The lay-out is gradually taking shape. Most breeds of fowls and ducks will be in the poultry show on July 4 and 5. On July 6, pigeons and bantams will be shown and canaries and cage birds on the Monday, July 8. At 11.15 a.m. on July 6, 300 Otago and Southland farmers are arriving, accompanied by management officials. At 10 a.m. on July 8, Mr. J. T. F. Mitchell, president of the exhibition, will welcome the farmers. The visitors are to be entertained extensively. The Auckland Provincial Council of Affiliated Associations is holding its yearly conference on July 9 and, in the evening, the secretaries of North Island associations will meet. The next day, the North Island conference of affiliated associations is to be held. Among the entertainments, arrangements have been made for the holding of pictures with synchronised music. Pupils from St. Stephen’s Maori College will sing in Maori and English and will give physical displays. There will be dancing by Miss Aileen Beresford’s pupils, and, near the end of the exhibition, a programme of 17 national and Highland dancing contests will be held.
