POTATOES SLIGHTLY EASIER

POSITION IN CANTERBURY Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. There has been a shade of easing for June potatoes and most of the business for this month has been done at £5 7s 6d, f.0.b., s.i. For the Waipiata next week a sale at £5 5s has been made. The Kaimanawa on Wednesday took from Lyttelton 2,450 sacks for Auckland and 1,550 for Napier and Gisborne. This is a small consignment for Auckland. The Kaimanawa’s last shipment contained a pi'oportion of blighted potatoes, and the fear of this recurring is stated by some Christchurch merchants as being responsible for restricting the amount of f.o.b. business taking place. Quotations for later months show little change, £5 15s being quoted for July and £6 2s 6d for July-September, Dakotas continue to show a substantial premium over whites, sales having been made at £6 10s. f.0.b., s.i., for this month. The Katoa is loading on Monday night, and the Waipiata at the end of the week.

Very little business is being done in the wheat market, the quietness applying to both milling and fowl wheat. The former is worth 5s 8d a bushel on trucks and fowl wheat 5s 7d, f.o.b. A fair amount of seed has gone out and indications are that the area being sown ■tfill be up to normal. The millers have contracted for a considerable area at 5s lid, f.0.b., for Tuscan, and 6s 2d for Hunters, with a proviso nullifying the contract should the duties be altered. Oats are weaker. Values for A Gartons have eased to 3s sd. f.0.b., s.i., and for B Gartons from 3s 3Jd to 3s 4d. Chaff continues firm without any change in prices. The seed market shows no change in values.
