DOMINIONS MINISTER
NEW BRITISH PORTFOLIO CONSIDERED
MR. HARTSHORN MENTIONED (United Service) LONDON, Thursday. A political correspondent says he 1 understands that the Prime Minister, : Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, is considering the creation of a new portfolio, that of Minister for the Dominions, as apart from the existing office of Secretary of State for the Dominions and Colonies. No decision has yet been reached, but it m?r be stated that there is every likcv Lhood of its accomplishment, and that Mr. Vernon Hartshorn, now a member of the Indian Commission, will fill the post. Mr. Hartshorn, who was PostmasterGeneral in the last Labour Government, is an Imperialist, who is highly regarded in the House of Commons. The idea is not new, as the Conservative Government had it in mind several years ago, but did not put it into operation. The change is coni sidered necessary because the Dominions’ functions are largely consultai tive, while the Colonial Office is be--1 coming increasingly administrative i and important, in view of Britain’s in- ! tention to exploit the colonies for the | development of the settlement of i migrants.
