Air was pumped into the mine, and the men stated that had it not been for this they would have been suffocated. The imprisoned men were heard trying to dig their way to safety with picks and shovels. When they were liberated, some were In an extremely weak condition. On June 3, three Italians who were overcome by foul gas in this mine died.
