WORKMAN’S ESCAPE
CROWBAR STRUCK BY LIGHTNING STEEL LEFT QUITE HOT Death stalked within a few yards of a workman at Mount Eden yesterday morning, when a crowbar for which he was reaching was struck by a blinding flash of lightning, which left the tool quite hot. 'J'HE incident, which startled eight workmen of the Mount Eden Borough Council, occurred during the height of the vivid electrical storm which passed over Auckland about 10 o’clock yesterday morning. The men were engaged in removing rocks on Boundary Road for road-widening improvements. Crowbars had been vigorously plied, but fortunately none of the men had implements in their hands when the bolt struck. One man was just about to pick up his crowbar when it was struck by a particularly vivid flash, which left it too warm to handle. In subsequent storms during the day orders were given the gang to drop all steel tools.
