’FLU GAINS GROUND
NO DANGER IF CARE IS TAKEN “VERY MILD,” SAYS DOCTOR Rain, cold winds and a severe snap of wintry weather generally throughout the province, have assisted a mild form of influenza to gain much ground in the past few days. School children are among the principal sufferers and the decline in attendances at country schools during the past week has been the most serious this winter. “A mild form of Influenza is certainly very prevalent just now, but it is just the usual result of the winter season, and there need be no alarm whatever,” said Dr. H. Chesson, of the Health Department, this morning. “The majority of cases are really heavy colds, and cases of influenza are generally the result of carelessness on the part of those affected. People should take every care to prevent this aftermath, and keep to their beds when colds are caught.” Several reports of falling school attendances have been received by the Auckland Education Board, but it has been stipulated that schools can be kept open. Recently the teacher at the Titirangi School advised that no children had appeared one morning, the Whangarei School attendance sheet was short of 100 pupils one day last week. The board was informed yesterday that one child out of 20 had reported at the Maungakaramea School. In all cases the teachers were instructed to carry on. * No city schools are seriously affected.
