Two Big Games
RUGBY AT EDEN PARK Start of Second Round A GOOD programme will be provided Rugby enthusiasts at Eden Park tomorrow. On No. 1 ground two big games will be staged. At three o’clock Grammar Old Boys will play Ponsonby and the early game will be between Training College and University. In the first game of the season Grammar Old Boys defeated Ponsonby by 19 points to 8, but today it is a different Ponsonby. Conditions, however, will suit Grammar Old Boys and if they can play their own game an even contest should be quite possible.
Earlier in the season Training Colleg defeated University by 20 points to 11, but tomorrow the teachers will have to produce their best to secure a win over Varsity. Varsity is another team that has come on a lot lately, and with both teams playing the same type of game, bright Rugby should be seen. No. 2 ground should also have a close game. College Rifles at present is at the bottom of the ladder with three points, and Grafton has four. Both teams will work hard to improve their positions. Marist and Technical Old Boys will play on No. 3 ground and at the Showgrounds Manukau will meet City. At Middlemore tomorrow. King’s College will play Auckland Grammar School. Both schools will field strong fifteens, and a good exhibition of Rugby should result. St. Heliers has two games to play; Suburbs and Papateotoe have each one game to play. Junior representative football has been more or less neglected during the past few years, but this season the game is to be encouraged by a fairly extensive programme of rep. fixtures. The Junior Management Committee lias already received a number of requests for visits by the Auckland junior reps, and it is practically certain that trips will be undertaken to Pukekohe, Taupiri, Rangiriri and Helensville, and possibly to Thames. College Rifles and Varsity battled hard for second place on the third open championship ladder at the end of the first round on Saturday. The students had slightly the better of play, particularly in the tight scrumming, and went down by five points to three.
Gould, who is playing side row of the College Rifles pack, is developing into a dashing forward. He was rover of King’s College senior team last season and judging by his style of play ho might be of more value to Rifles in t that position. Bleakley and Smith were the most outstanding of the remainder of the Rifles forwards.
Halliwell, centre, is the star of the back division. He had materially improved since last year, when as a member of the King’s College team he scored 14 points in the annual match against Grammar. His goal-kicking is as good as ever, and on Saturday he piloted a beautiful kick over the bar. Heather, at the base of the scrum, and Halliwell, at fullback, are both playing good football.
Among the Varsity forwards Tattersfield and ClelZand -worked hard in the tight and loose. McCoy and Ludbrook, half and five-eighths respectively, combined in some nice movements, but both were exceptionally well watched. Mason and Andrews, in the threequarter line, both performed very brightly, the latter scoring Varsity’s only try.
Marathon gave Grafton a lively time at Eden Park on Saturday and with better combination among the backs might have run their opponents closer than 12 points. Fissen and Nicklin were always in the picture for the magpies, while Sly field was prominent in Marathon’s work.
Ponsonby rattled up the big score of 29 points against a weak College team at Eden Park on Saturday. Conway and Pope displayed a nice understanding of each other’s play and were largely responsible for creating scoring openings. Byson and Summers, rover, played vigorously in the forwards, both being outstanding for their line-out and loose work.
