“HARD-UP” LANDOWNER
CHARITABLE RELIEF PAID DISCLOSURES IN WELLINGTON Press Association WELLINGTON, Thursday. The fact was revealed at a meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board today that a family of four had for some months been receiving charitable aid to the extent of 25s -weekly from the Social Welfare Committee -while during the period the income of the family amounted to £2l 15s a month. When the committee made this discovery the relief, of course, was promptly stopped. Mr. G. Petherick, chairman of the Social Welfare Committee, said there were only four in the family, and it was a sad case as far as the husband was concerned. The committee knew only parts of the facts, and investigations showed that what he had now stated was correct. There -was no doubt the family was receiving £2l 15s a month and had purchased a piano at a cost of £l9O, although only a deposit had been paid on it. Mr. A. J. McCurdy said that in another case it was found that the last instalment on a piano had just been paid, and another person receiving help was found to own a section.
