GOVERNMENT THANKED MEASURES FOR RELIEF MESSAGE FROM COMMITTEE Press Association NELSON, Today. The following resolution has been passed by the Nelson City Council which, with a few additions, including Murchison representatives, comprises the Nelson Relief Committee: "That this council desires to express to Sir Joseph Ward its grateful thanks for his Government’s very prompt response to all requests made for the purpose of alleviating the distress and disorganisation resulting from the recent earthquake. "The council also desires to convey its great appreciation of the very fine services so willingly rendered by the various Government departments concerned, notably the railway service, telegraph and telephone s€*rvice and public works service in keeping transport possible, all duties being onerous and the two latter at times distinctly dangerous.”
TOUCH FINE WORK BY TELEGRAPH LINESMEN PERILOUS JOURNEYS MADE Press Association NELSON, Today. I The chief telegraph engineer, Mr. A. Gibbs, and Mr. J. McDermott, district telegraph engineer, of Wellington, are at present in Nelson In connection with arrangements for restoring the shattered telegraph services in Murchison and surrounding districts. Every effort will be made to link up the district again. Telephonic communication is being effected today with Murchison from Reefton, via Springs Junction and Maruia. The lines are very badly damaged from Glenhope to Inaugaliua Junction. What difficulties would have been encountered in getting the refugees away from Murchison if the telegraphic lines of communication had not been kept open cannot be imagined. Life depended on the wires remaining intact. The task, however, was a very severe and perilous one, and the telegraph linesmen, with many workers in other directions, have made history for New Zealand during the past 10 days. The earthquake cut off all communication with Murchison, and it was not until Mr. B. F. Spiers somehow or other made a perilous journey to Glenhope on the actual day of the occurrence and reported that the outside world knew what had happened. Immediately a party of telegraph linesmen was organised to restore communication. The party consisted of Mr. T. H. Jenkins, line foreman, of Nelson, and the following linesmen: Messrs. O. J. Kerr, E. Constable, C. Nicoll and P. . Holland.
VICTORIA LEAGUE’S AID LARGE BUNDLES OF CLOTHING The sewing circle of the Victoria. League is hard at work collecting garments to be sent down to the sutlers in the earthquake areas. All day yesterday the league rooms were crowded with workers busy receiving the clothes sent in and packing them for transmission to the South. There were 238 garments of various kinds made by the circle itself and contributions from the sub-committee of the Ever-Ready Girls brought the total up to 264. In addition, many more were sent in from private givers, including such things as pairs of trousers and even a fur coat and a man’s heavy overcoat. A bundle of children’s bloomers was also sent in, in each of which a tiny pocket had been contrived holding a §ay-eoloured handkerchief and a penny. The clothing which has so far been received is being sent down today to the Mayor of Nelson to distribute as he sees fit. FUNDS STILL COME IN TWO £I,OOO GIFTS MADE Money continues to come in steadily to swell the funds for the relief of sufferers in the earthquake district. An anonymous donor has sent £I,OOO to the Mayor of Westport and the Associated Banks, except the Bank of Xew Zealand, which has already made a gift, have decided to give another £I,OOO.
