WESTPORT SHOPS RESUME ’QUAKES AND THUNDER STORMS CSpecial to THE SUN) WESTPORT, Wednesday. Besides a continuance of earthquake shocks, Westport has been experiencing severe electrical disturbances and torrential rain. The early hours ot Tuesday morning were the worst, lightning, thunder and earth tremors occurring simultaneously. Many people again spent the night \ outside. Yesterday the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates ! visited Westport and delivered an ad- : dress from the balcony of the Vic- ! roria Theatre. He congratulated the i people on their behaviour and sin- | cerelv hoped that all tremors had now j ceased. The district had the sym- | pathy of the whole of New Zealand, ! as well as that of Parliament, and | the people could rest assured of Gov- | eminent assistance. Humour was added to the situation ! by the town receiving a severe shake ; a few minutes after Mr. Coates had j stopped speaking. i Captain H. B. Burrell intended I making another trip to Karamea to- ; dav, taking with him Mr. G. C. Black, i M.P.. but the weather was unsuit--1 able. Karamea is still isolated ex-
cept by airplane. Corbyvale is in the same predicament, and residents are eager to evacuate the borough. The w r ater supply was resumed late yesterday. The borough engineer and his men have been working 24 hours a day to restore the service. Pears of an epidemic are now allayed. It is now reported that the Westport-Murchison road will be constructed down Maruia Valley and into Reefton, thus cutting out Newton Plat. Lyell Valley is an easier grade than the Gorge in Westport. Tin chimneys are springing up everywhere, and, with water services restored, the people are enjoying their , first hot bath for nearly a fortnight. Many business houses have resumed and others are carrying on in temporary premises.
