RADICAL TAX CHANCES
BIGGER BURDEN FOR LANDOWNERS INCOMES MAY PAY LESS (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. rpAXATION is expected to engage much of the attention of the Government during the coming session of Parliament, and it is whispered that radical changes may be made in the income and company taxes, with perhaps an increase in the land tax to compensate for the loss of revenue by reduction in the other taxes. It is felt that the income tax should not be so heavy while holders of big areas of land are shouldering a much lighter burden. Some of the load which has rested on the shoulders of the private persons paying taxes will be shifted by statute if possible on to the shoulders of the big landholder. The question of taxing municipal trading enterprises will, it is said, also engage the attention of the Government, and it is possible that municipal trading concerns will be placed on the same basis as private companies with regard to taxation. It is certain that the legislation dealing with this question will be contentious.
