SIR JOSEPH DENIES RUMOURS RETRENCHMENT TALK (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reports WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The statements made in Auckland by the Minister of Health, 1 the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, con- • cerning a scheme of retrenchment ! by the Government, during the » coming session, to compensate for » the deficit of the last financial j year, gave rise to two rumours in j Wellington. One was that the Forestry Depart* ment would be merged with the Lands Department, which formerly controlled afforestation, and the other was that there would be a Civil Ser* vice “cut” again. To both rumours vigorous denials were given. The Commissioner of State Forests, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, said that there was no foundation for the re* port, as the Forestry Department was being conducted on sound lines and was becoming increasingly valuable to the State. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Kan. Sir Joseph Ward, said that no Civil Service retrenchment was contemplated, and that the statement had been made without his authority. If any action of the kind were intended, he was the person to make the aty nouncemeDt.
