Stallworthy, con- • cerning a scheme of retrenchment ! by the Government, during the » coming session, to compensate for » the deficit of the last financial j year, gave rise to two rumours in j Wellington. One was that the Forestry Depart* ment would be merged with the Lands Department, which formerly controlled afforestation, and the other was that there would be a Civil Ser* vice “cut” again. To both rumours vigorous denials were given. The Commissioner of State Forests, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, said that there was no foundation for the re* port, as the Forestry Department was being conducted on sound lines and was becoming increasingly valuable to the State.
