A BROKEN ENGAGEMENT

Dear Miss Rutledge,— I have been worrying for so long a time now that I have lost my appetite and feel quite incapable of work. My trouble is that after I became engaged my fiance quarrelled with his mother, as she didn’t approve of me. So we drifted apart, our engagement was broken, and we remained only friends. Then another young man became very fond of me, and I liked him until we had been friendly for two or three months, when suddenly his manner annoyed me. I feel at a loss because at most social functions a partner is necessary. I am unable to forgot my late fiance. The more I go out with the second young man, the more I think of the first, who is afraid to come to see me because of my father. So I come to you for advice. BROKEN-HEARTED ANSWER I can understand vour reactions, but you will feel better when you just relax on the question, and become guided to the right solution. By your letter, I take it that you are of responsible age and really in love v/ith man number one. As you cannot bury Truth, why not have a heart-to-heart talk with your late finned, and find out the actual reasons for the objection of the mother. If, frankly, you find that the objections are ill-founded or unworthy, why net keep up the friendship? Endeavour by a happy abundance of good nature to break down the prejudice. Failing this remedy, why not marry providing the man is in a position to do so? ANNE RUTLEDGE.
