FIRE AT BIRKENHEAD
GOOD WORK BY BUCKET BRIGADE minor damage to flat Passengers were leaving the ferry boat at Birkenhead about 5.30 p.m. yesterday when they heard cries of “Fire!” proceeding from an apartment house known as ‘ Headlands.” A bucket brigade was promptly formed, and the fire was extinguished. The Northcote Fire Brigade answered a call, but its services were not required. The property is a large wooden building situated in Hinemoa Street, near the Birkenhead wharf, and owned by Mr Winch, of Wanganui. The lire occurred in a flat occupied by Mr. Walter Frederick Braggs, with his wife and family. Mrs. Braggs left some clothes to” air on chairs in front of an open fire, while she went to aji adjoining room. The clothes caught fire, and the two upholstered chairs on which the clothes were hanging were burned, and the mantlepiece was badly charred. The ceiling was catching lire when the bucket brigade got it under control.
