EERIE WAILS
Herne Bay Residents Serenaded AN INTERRUPTED CONCERT A piercing shriek, sustained, but finally dying away to a low muttering that bristled with menace—truly an eerie sound to assail one’s ears from out a dark and starless night. Residents of a "Herne Bay street listened apprehensively and huddled closer to their fires. . For nearly an hour the weird cries continued while the short intervals of comparative silence were filled with the moaning of the wind. Though there could be little doubt as to the origin of the wailing that so _ perturbed the residents, not a few thought nervously of the possibility of a terrible “something” from the zoo roaming their front gardens. Stories of the leopard that terrified Auckland for some days three years ago were discussed by some firesides until, after an unusually heavy downpour of rain, the half-dozen or so cats that were serenading the neighbourhood decided to abandon the concert and scatter in search of shelter.
