WON BY FIRST EM DEN.—The Iron Cross, inscribed “W. 1914,” and the arms of the town of Emden, adorn the bows of the German cruiser Emden, now in dock at Devonport. he cross was awarded by the Kaiser to the first Emden in recognition of its wartime exploits. Top: The late Captain von Muller (left), who commanded the latter ship on its famous raiding cruise, and Captain von Arnauld de la Periere, commanding officer of the present Emden. Both officers were themselves awarded the Iron Cross for war service.
