In the Market Place
PRICES UNCHANGED NO BRISK INQUIRIES Scarcely changed in prices from those ruling at last sales, fruit in the City Marts today did not excite brisk inquiry generally. There may be better sales on Friday. Apples are selling fairly steadily and satisfactory prices are being realised for large, good-conditioned varieties. The demand for pears is only nominal. No inquiry exists for local passions. Cook Island tomatoes are finished, but there is fair attention for hothouse tomatoes. Oranges are selling better than lemons, which are dull of sale. Most vegetable lines are meeting with a fair demand. HERD TESTING
NEED OF GREATER EFFORT Gratification at progress made in herd-testing work is expressed in the 3oth annual report of the National Dairy Association. The number of cows under test for the season was approximately 250,000 or about 25,000 more than the record number in the previous season, states the report. However, this represented under 20 per cent, of the total number of cows in milk throughout the Dominion, and while it was gratifying to witness the growth of the movement each year, it must bo recognised that at least 30 per cent, of the dairy cattle should be under test each season if the industry as a whole was to obtain the maximum benefits from the herd-test-ing service.
