BUILDING NEW CARS

ACCEPTANCE OF TENDERS MASS PRODUCTION METHOD The tender of the Whitworth Engineering Company of £9,040, for truck frames, brake and draw gear for 25 new tramcars was accepted this morning by the Auckland Transport Board out of 11 | tenders. I The tender of H. C. Williams, of £23,100 for 20 car bodies was also accepted. The manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, reported that as Mr. Williams’s tender was £4,760 less than the only other tenderer, he made inquiries and ascertained that the low figure was possible because Mr. Williams was purchasing nearly the whole of the timber body machined to size from Henderson and I Pollard, who could turn out the timber I in mass production and so quote a low price. Air. Ford stated that Henderson and Pollard had been approached and had agreed to supply finished timber for the five cars to be built in the board’s workshops. The acceptance of the firm’s price would reduce the cost of , building each body from £1,426 to ; £1,274. It was decided to accept Hen- | derson and Pollard’s services.
