KING COUNTRY NEWS

The Mayor of Taumarunui, Mr. G. A. Boles, has opened a subscription list for the relief of sufferers by the Southern earthquakes.

At the formal opening of the Matiere Golf Club, the president, Mr. A. L. Ross, explained that the opening had been somewhat delayed owing to improvements being carried out on the greens, but play would be possible for the next six months. Mr. J. V. Ross, winner of the president’s trophy for 1928, was handed his prize by the club captain.

Owing to the illness of its president, Mr. J. Whittaker, the Manunui Homing Pigeon Cub’s annual meeting was presided over by Mr. R. F. Beautrais, chairman of the town board. A lengthy toast list was honoured, and the following trophy winners announced for the season:—Mr. J. Pedersen’s trophy, winner, Mr. J. Whittaker; Mrs. D. Andrews’s trophy, winner, Mr. J. Whittaker; Mr. S. Klink’s trophy, winner, Mr. J. Whittaker; Mr. G. Matthews’s trophy, winner, Mr. J. Whittaker; Mr. D. Brown’s trophy, won by Mr. J. Whittaker; Mr. C. B. Simons’s trophy, won by Mr. J. Whittaker. Cup positions: Mr. D. Brown’s Cup (three successive wins), won for 1929 by Mr. J. Whittaker; Mr. R. Patterson’s Cup, 1929, won by Mr. Whittaker. This winner’s birds have put up a great average, and for a distance of 34,323 yards showed a velocity of 927yds a race.

Mr. J. Ball, representing the Radio Broadcasting Company of New Zealand, addressed a meeting of enthusiasts at Taumarunui, and met with a good reception. During the subsequent discussion Mr. D. H. Hall referred to the interference local listeners-in suffered from what would probably be traced to defective power lines, and moved, Mr. J. Mangham seconding, that Mr. Ball place the position before Mr. Gibb, chief engineer of the Post and Telegraph Department, with a request for an investigation, and if possible, a remedy of the trouble.

The Taumarunui Borough Council has decided to investigate the position fully before giving a decision on the hospital board’s proposal for the erection of an isolation block costing £4,500 at the local hospital. Owners of electric water-heater systems which are not run in connection with an electric range are to be given 18 months’ notice that the council intends to charge full heating rates for electricity used for such purposes.

At its last meeting the Ohura County Council passed a resolution approving of the Taumarunui Hospital Board’s proposals for the erection of an isolation block, on the basis of a 362.-year loan for the purpose.
