At the Grand are Air. and Mrs. F. ; M. Clarke, of Wellington. Mrs. R. Browning and Mrs. W. Watson, of Wellington, are staying at the Hotel Cargen. At the Albert Hotel are Mr. and Mrs. X. C. Andrew, of Wellington, and Mr. and Mrs. X. McNair, of Taumarunui. Miss Isabelle Brook, accompanied bv her mother, Mrs. H. H. Brook, of Epsom, has returned home from Wellington. Miss X. M. Scanlon, of Wellington, who recently returned from the Continent, has now nearly recovered from T a somewhat severe illness. ( ♦ * * c Mr. W. B. Montgomery and his * daughter, Miss Edith Montgomery, of Wellington, are touring abroad. They £ are visiting America and Canada before going to England. Miss Ada King, a young Christchurch musician, has left for Europe. She will stay with relatives in Xice, and later intends continuing her studies in violin playing and voice production in London. The League of New Zealand Penwomen on Friday afternoon extended a cordial welcome home to Miss Mona Gordon, whose book, “Torn Tapestry,” will shortly make its appearance at the local booksellers. Among the guests at the Star are Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Leary, of Dunedin ; Mr. and Mrs. D. G. Reid, of Dunedin; Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Rivie, of Dunedin: Mr. and Mrs. A. Craig, of Otago; Mr. and Mrs. J. Cochrane, of Otago, and Mrs. A. Bryan, of Thames. Lady Parr presented several Xew Zealanders at the Queen’s second court. The gown of Lady Parr, as designed and produced by Francois Barry, was of crepe chiffon suzette in the palest shades of shell pink, appliciued with fine black Chantilly lace and hand-embroidered in fine threads of gold and silver. The train was of lace and also hand-embroidered with gold and silver, lined with pink crepe suzette and bordered with black ring velvet and fine lace and net. WOMEN POLICE “NOT UNDESIRABLE” COUNCIL SPEAKS UP I “'We are not asking for anything | unusual, anything uncommon, or anything undesirable.” j Thus commented Miss B. E. Carnachan, president of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women, which met last evening during a discussion on a remit protesting against the reported statement of the Minister of Justice, the Hon. T. M. Wilford, that while he occupied that position he would never recommend the appointment of women police. "Countries that have tried women police strongly advocate their work," continued Miss Carnachan. Members expressed the opinion that in such a position as he occupied, the Minister should not allow personal bias to influence bis judgment. The following remits were passed by the meeting: From the Ex-Service Women’s Association: "That the Railway Department be asked to appoint one or more Red Cap porters at Newmarket.” “That as many workers do not begin work before 9 a.m., the Railway Department be petitioned to concede the workers concession privileges until that hour.” From the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children came the following notice of motion: “That this society should make representation to the Minister of Justice through the National Council of Women against evidence being taken from young girls by constables in cases of immorality or of obscene language.” WAITING FOR BUSES The Avondale Women’s Club asked that the National Council of Women draw the attention of the Auckland Transport Board to the hardships entailed by women, especially those with children, while waiting for feeder buses at tram termini. Passengers in many cases had to stand shelterless in all sorts of weather when waiting for their buses. A deputation was appointed to wait upon the Transport Board and discuss the matter, the deputation to comprise Miss Carnachan, Miss Newton, Miss Flatt, Mrs. Watson, Major Gordon and Dr. Buckley Turkington. A notice of motion was received from I the Honorary Members’ Association requesting that the National Council of Women go into the matter of setting up a sub-committee to make inquiries into the general conditions of i the trainng of nurses in the hospitals. ; Miss Carnachan said that there was : a great deal involved in this matter, J and she suggested that the Honorary i Members’ Association form a sub-com- ! mittee to make their investigations and | bring their report and recommendations to the executive of the council for their consideration. Delegates who had been away from several meetings on leave of absence, Dr. Hilda Nortlicroft and Major Gordon. were welcomed by the meeting. The visitors who were welcomed included Mrs. Shallcross, of Timaru, and Miss Griffin, of Gisborne. A letter was received from the Civic League of Te Kuiti stating that Mrs. Wills had been appointed their dele- [ gate to the council. It was also re- ! ported that the St. John Methodist ! Ladies’ Guild had decided to reaffilii ate with the council. j Miss Newell and Dr. Buckley Turkington addressed the meeting on diffl erent aspects of the work of the Doi minion Conference held at Gisborne : last month.
