PLAZA
“GIVE AND TAKE* That the new art of motion picture talkies can be used to make excellent comedies as well as serious dramas is well demonstrated by the amusing talkie now at the Plaza Theatre. The crowds at each of the three daily sessions have rocked with laughter at the dialogue in “Give and Take.” “Give and Take” touches one of the modern phases of business, and shows the advantages and disadvantages of the system whereby employees share in the profits of the company for which they work. The story concerns a fruit canning factor:/. The owner has built up his business step by step, bearing the entire responsibility of financing it. His son returns from college and feeling that as he is a member of the firm, and should demonstrate fair play to the employee, he endeavours to put the business on a profit-sharing basis. Jean Hersholt, famous character star, plays the role of Bauer, owner of the factory and father of young Jack Bauer. George Sidney, who enacts the role of Kruger, life-long friend of Bauer, gives one of his inimitable characterisations and causes laughs galore in this excellent comedy-drama. • George Lewis as young Jack Bauer and Sharon Lynn as his sweetheart have the juvenile leads and carry the love interest of the story. The specially selected a.II-talking supports comprise music and a number of excellent vaudeville items. There is “Light Cavalry” overture, played by the Vitaphone Symphony Orchestra, banjo playing by Eddie Peabody, songs by the three Geisdorf Sisters, of New York, musical comedy fame, and “The Song of the Volga Boatmen.”
