Day of Dividends

OUTSIDERS SCORE IN MUD Good Totalisator Increase AUCKLAND FIXTURE CONCLUDES DESPI IE the showery weather experienced yesterdav there was a good attendance at Alexandra' Park to witness the final day’s racing of the Auckland Trotting Club s winter fixture, which provided splendid sport on a track rendered slushy and soft by the heavy rain.

From a racing point of view, the conditions could not possibly have been worse, and backers experienced a bad day. favourites failing to handle the track to advantage, with the result that there were many good “turn-ups” for the few who favoured the chances of outsiders. Sebisca, Reremai. and The Tartar, who were returned winners, paid prices bordering on a score, and in each in-

stance the success was well received, although the great majority were not participants in the big figures. As on the opening day, everything passed off without a hitch, the various officials, with Mr. A. G. Mabee, in the secretarial department, working with a harmony that made for a successful function. The sport was conducted with a cleanness that could not fail to impress patrons, and stipendiary stewards Messrs. Reid and Commons found their duties light and pleasant. Speculation was decidedly brisk, an efficient and well organised totalisator staff handling £ 35,378 for the day, against £ 24,862 for the corresponding day last year—an appreciable increase of £10,516. For the meeting, the sum of £74,067 passed through tho machine —an increase of £B,llO over the last Juno function, when the total reached £65,956.

In so mo of the events, intensely exciting finishes were witnessed, no one but tho man in the box being able to place the four leading horses. Cardinal lxigan won the Mark Memorial Handicap in good style for A. Hendricksen, while Geo. Mitchell scored an easy victory with Reremai in the Adams Memorial Gold Cup. Tho same reinsman was successful with Sebisca in the Royal Trot, and Geo. Patou got The Tartar home in the Members* Trot. W. J. Tomkinson steered a winner in Dalmeny, while Derby Lynn, with a dual victory, gave \V. Hughes two winning drives. The splendid performances of the Nelson Derby four-year-old stamped her as a pacer of rare ability, and she should yet reach the highest society in the Dominion. Flags were flown half-mast on the various buildings as a mark of respect to Mr. A. Ashton, who died on Sunday. For over 30 years deceased had been connected with the clerical ataff of the Auckland Club. Backers on the Job Derby Lynn won the opening event handsomely, coining from the back over the hist half mile. She was favourite with £295, while there was support also for Trustworthy £235 and Hal Chimes £2ll. Gold Cast settled down quickly, being attended out of the straight the first time by Belle Axworthy, Hohora, Warspite, Dad’s Hope and Explosion. In the next time round Cold Cast, Explosion, Belle Axworthy, Warspite, Hal Chimes, llohora and Trustworthy was the order, with Derby Lynn handy. The favourite moved up along the back, where Gold Cast, Explosion, Hal Chimes, Kelle Axworthy and Hohora comprised the first bunch. Crossing tho top Trustworthy and Derby Lynn moved up fast, and they turned into the home stretch on terms with Hal Chimes, with Belle Axworthy. Gold Cast and Hohora close up. Derby Lynn finished best on the extreme outer to win by two and abalf lengths from Hal Chimes, with Trustworthy a length back third. Explosion was a poor fourth and Gold Cast, Belle Axworthy, Hohora and Richore next. Exciting Finish Appeal made tho pace in tho Royal Trotting Handicap, and had such a commanding lead that he never looked Uke getting beaten, but he stopped to a walk in tho straight, and finished fourth. The favourites were Akenehi, £912. and Wall, £3S6. with Sebisca

£lsl at long odds, the best part of a sc ore. Appeal had charge from Peterson in the first lap, but the second time round, and setting out on tho last circuit, Appeal was six lengths in front Kolmar, with Sebisca, Dipnoi. Peter JJcKinney, Akenehi. Floraline, Golden and Wah following. Crossing the and into tho straight. Floraline, Akenehi, Peter McKinney, and u ‘Pnoi were closing on the leader, but h Was not until tho last 30 yards that ® was collared. Sebisca finishing strongly to win by a head from Dipnoi. with Floraline another head away. neck in front of Appeal. Peter MeFinney, Golden Gate, Wah, Etta Cole,

and Gold Star, at intervals, headed the remainder. Easy for Nelson Dillon Explosion was the only withdrawal from tho Suburban Handicap, which resulted in a good win for Nelson Dillon- Favourites were Nelson Dillon £676, Arachno and the HorizonFolly's Picture bracket, betting taking a good range. Hostess led past the stands tho first time from Enawaii. Sailor Boy, Lady Barrington, Nelson Dillon, Gold Sovereign and WrackeenSetting out on the last round Hostess and Nelson Dillon were together ahead of Enawah, Sailor Boy and Mountain Dell (who got up). Nelson Dillon took Charge crossing the top and turned for home wide out and on terms with Hostess, with gaps back to Enawah and Sailor Boy. Nelson Dillon won comfortably by two and a-half lengths from Hostess, with three lengths back to Horizon. Next were Sailor Boy, Limosa, Mountain Dell and Polly’s Picture. The Tartar Goes Right Western Voyage was the best backed, carrying £1,104. while Rose Bingen £ 1.077 and Ngatira £867 were next in demand. The winner, The Tartar, carried only £lsl 10s and paid just on a score. The Tartar went to the front straight away and led past the stand tho first time from Tradesman, who was a few lengths clear of Cannonbull, Rose Bingen, Bingen Starr, Western Voyage and Native Star. There Was little alteration until they came to the stand the second time when The 1 artar was leading Rose Bingen, Bingen Starr, Tradesman and Native Star. That was the order on the final circuit and crossing the top Tho Tartar was clear of Cannonball and Rose Bingen, tile only two with a chance of heading the leader. The Tartar, although troubled by Cannonball, held on to win by two and a-half lengths from Cannonball, with Rose Bingen three lengths away. Bingen Starr, Western Voyage and Native Star were next. Derby Lynn Makes It Two

In a good betting race Nelson McCormack received most public support, carrying £628, with Derby Lynn (£530) and Trustworthy (£501) next best backed. Gold Cast was the early leader from Sailor Boy, Carmel, Trustworthy, Hockaway and Nelson McCormack retired, leaving Carmel in Gold Cast still had charge from Nelson McCormack, Sailor Boy, Trustworthy, Carmel and Rockaway, all being close up. Along the back Nelson McCormack retired, leavign Carmel in behind Gold Cast, with Sailor Boy and Trustworthy handy. Going into the straight Gold Cast and Trustworthy were practically together, followed by Sailor Boy and Derby Lynn, who was showing up on the outside. Derby Lynn finished too strong for the others and finished two lengths ahead of Trustworthy, who stopped badly, with Sailor Boy a neck away third. Then came Stanmoor, Brutus and Gold Cast. The Recovery Stakes AY ith backers looking for a recovery there was a big pool in the Liverpool Handicap, and when the machine closed Bessie Logan £927, Vesuvius £845, Dalmeny £7Ol and Harvest Child £695 were the prime fancies. Daytime, Harvest Child, Dalmeny find All Bell began smartly, but with half a furlong covered the latter went to tho front, closely attended by The Abbey, and this pair led past the stands from Dalmeny, Machine Gun, Bessie Logan and Vesuvius. There was little alteration along the back, except that the favourite was sent back and Dillon Huon began to show up, and crossing the top he was going strongly behind All Bell and The Abbey. At the home turn All Bell was still in the van from Dalmeny, The Abbey. Dillon Huon and Machine Gun. with Bessie Logan coming well on the outside. In the run home Dalmeny finished with determination to get a head victory over All Bell, with Dillon Huon a neck away, third, and Bessie Logan fourth. Then came Machine Gun, Harvest Child and Jewel Pointer. MANUKAU HANDICAP Of £250; 15 miles, limit 3.25£ 1— DERBY LYNN (J. A. Mitchell), b m, by Nelson Derby—Edna, 4yrs, 21yds, W. was accounted for by the fact that the daughter of Our Thorpe had given away three seconds to get into the race, which meant that those behind her wero meeting her on much better terms than the first day. In fact, Reremai had not tho necessary qualifications as far as performances go to allow her to compete in this important event, hut owner Simkin shrewdly nominated Reremai for a recent event in the South Island, and by virtue of being handicapped in a tighter class, became eligible for the Adams Handicap. That his judgment of tho mare’s ability was well founded was proved when she made a field of good horses look cheap at the end of the contest. Best public support was accorded Linkman £1,066, with Evelyn Locanda £989 and Dalmeny £923 closely iollowing. The winner, Reremai, found little favour, carrying only £IOO 10s, and paid a dividend in the vicinity of a score. All Bell went to the front at the start, and at the stands was leading Brutus, Evelyn Locanda, Gold Dial, Tony Victor, Reremai, Harvest Child and Linkman. There was little change as they raced round and when they came to the stands the second time All Bell still had charge, with Brutus, Evelyn Locanda, Reremai, Linkman and Tony Victor next. Reremai had taken charge going down the back and was just ahead of All Bell, Evelyn Locanda, Linkman and Harvest Child. Reremai was out well clear of Evelyn Locanda, All Bell and Linkman as they turned for home, and tho leader never looked like being beaten. Reremai went on to win by three lengths from Evelyn Locanda, who was two lengths ahead of Linkman. All Bell stopped in the run home and finished fourth, with Nelson Tasker, Gold Dial, Harvest Child and Wrackler next. PRESENTATIONS After the race, the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, Minister of Internal Affairs, presented the handsome Gold Cup to owner J. Simkin. congratulating the Mangere sportsman on the fine achievement of his mare. The Minister referred to the generosity of the donor, Mrs. Adams, in annually providing such a valuable trophy for competition. Driver G. Mitchell was also the recipient of a gold-mounted whip, and complimented «n his skilful manipulation of the ribbons. A pleasant function terminated with cheers for the donor of the cup, owner of the winner and driver.
