Cardinal Logan Enjoys Alexandra Park Mud

ANOTHER VICTORY MARK MEMORIAL SUCCESS While there was never much separating the field in the Mark Memorial Handicap, when the real business was on, there was plentv of daylight showing between the placed horses when the judge's box was passed the last time, Cat dinal Logan winning by two clear lengths from the favourite, Kohara, with the trotter Young Blake nearly twice that distance back, third. Vesuvius being withdrawn left nine runners to lace the starter, and the race provided a spectacular contest for the major portion of the journej-. Tho field bunched early, and ran in close formation till the lane was reached the last time, where several of the competitors showed signs of the strenuous struggle in the heavy track. This is the third year in succession the Cardinal has scored at Epsom in tho winter. Kohara was selected for the position of favourite, carrying £1,248 with Cardinal Logan £992 and Padlock £656 next in demand. Passing the stand tho first time Young Blake was leading from a closely bunched field which comprised Torpedo lluon. The Abbey, Cardinal Logan, Kohara, Logan Chief, Padlock and Dundas Boy in that order. Going down the back Young Blake still held the lead from Torpedo lluon, Gold Jacket, Kohara and Cardinal Logan. Passing the stand on the second round Gold Jacket had taken charge from Dundas Boy. Young Blake. Kohara and Cardinal Logan. Coming into the straight the last time Dundas Boy

turned for home on terms with Kohara, with Cardinal Logan right up and Gold Jacket and Y'oung Blake next. Kohara stopped in the run home. Cardinal Logan doing the best to win by two lengths from Kohara, with Y'oung Blake three lengths away third. Gold Jacket was fourth, followed by Dundas Boy and Padlock. How They Ran Cardinal Logan owed his success in a large measure to the patient manner in which he was driven by A. Hendriksen. The big pacer never attempted to get to the front till the vanguard was showing signs of weariness, and then when asked for a final effort he fairly revelled in the mud, and displayed a vigorous finish. Kohara was taken close up to the leaders shortly after the start, and when heads were turned for home was running outside of Dundas Boy in front of the field. Finishing inside out the black pacer battled on gallantly, but was no match over the last 100yds for the winner.
