Mrs. Scott West • < was an enthusiastic worker in social spheres in Auckland and was one of 1 the founders of the Auckland Y.W.C.A. When Mr. Scott West received his ap- ; pointment to St. James's Church. Bur- 1 wood, Sydney, about 26 years ago, a : position he still holds, Mrs. Scott West went to Australia with her husband, but revisited Auckland in 192 5 in , connection with the diamond jubilee of St. David’s Church. MR. J. R. MACLEAN The death of Mr. John Roderick Maclean occurred at his home. South Road, Waipu, last week. Born at Baularderie Island. Cape Breton. Nova Scotia, in 1854, Mr. Maclean sailed with his parents for New Zealand in 1857 in the ship Breadalbane and arrived at Auckland in the following year. Toward the end of the year the family moved to Waipu and com* | menced farming at Finlayson’s Brook.; In 1892 Mr. Maclean married Miss j E. M. McGregor. At one time he was ! chairman of the local school commit- I tee and also of the Waipu Medical j Club, in addition to being a member | of the now defunct Waipu Road Board, j Mr. Maclean is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters. CUBITT The death occurred at Devonpovt | yesterday of the Rev. L. L. Cubitt ! ; who has worked for the Anglican i Church in Xew Zealand since 1876. 1 Mr. Cubitt, who was aged S 3, was i the only son of the Rev. B. L. Cubitt. i i

late rector of Catfield, in Xerfolk, and lie was sent out to Xew Zealand with his wife by Bishop Cowie, who ordained him deacon shortly after his arrival. He was first appointed to home mission work, having to cover an area stretching from Onehunga to Tuakau, but within six months he was sent up to Whangarei as curate ii* charge. Two years later he was ordained priest, and given full charge of the parish of Whangarei. In the district Mr. Cubitt did a great share of pioneering work. For the greater part of his ministry the roads were uui metalled, and he had to do nearly ail his travelling throughout his extensive parish on horseback. He and Mr. Duxfield, of Nguruuwahia, were instrumental in getting a high school started, in Whangarei. It was practically a private school, but. ‘ after a time, they consented to hand it lover to the control of a Board of Governors. Mr. Duxfield being appointed * headmaster, and Mr. Cubitt a member ! of the board. Mr. Cubitt was a prominent member of the “Star of the Xorth Lodge,’’ and when he left Whangarei about 19 years ago he was presented with a jewel. On his departure a public farewell was held, and the Mayor, Mr. McClintock, presented him with a gold watch. While in Whangarei Mr. Cubitt was chaplain of the Marsden Mounted Rifles, with the rank of captain, and he was also a captain in the Whangarei Rifles, being put on the retired list as major in the fourth class when j he left the district. When they left Whangarei Mr. and Mrs. Cubitt settled in Devonport, Mr. Cubitt being appointed honorary curate of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church. This position lie held for many years, being eventually compelled to give it up a few years ago owing to failing health. Mr. Cubitt is survived by his wife and a family of eight. The family consists of the following:—Mr. F. L. ; Cubitt, of Waiotira, Mr. A. L. Cubitt J and Mr. E. R. Cubitt, of Auckland, Mr. i I J - X. Cubitt, of Wellington, Mrs. R. jD. Duxfield, of Horotiu. Mrs. Hetherjington. of Xgaruawahia, Mrs. G. j Hetherington, of Otahuhu, and MiCubitt. of Auckland. Another daughter. Mrs. Castleton, was killed in an acciI dent two years ago.
