In a thrilling boxing contest last evening Johnnie Leckie (New Zealand), Bst lOAlb, defeated Pete Sarron (United States), Sst 91b. on points at the Sydney Stadium. A large crowd of onlookers cheered the boxers. Sarron’s vicious swings occasionally connected, and Leckie was more than once in a bad way. He was severely punished in the seventh round and was sent to the floor twice for two short counts, but he came back in an anfazing manner and piled up the points. Sarron received rough handling after that. The New Zealander hit more cleanly than hi-s adversary. He used lofts to the face freely, with telling effect. Nevertheless there was always a danger of Sarron scoring a knock-out so tigerishly did he fight. A large percentage of the crowd thought the match should have been declared a draw.
