HONOURED BY FRIENDS

SOCIAL FOR POSTMASTERGENERAL VALUE OF SERVICES A complimentary social was tendered to the Hon. J. B. Donald, Post-master-General and member for Auckland East, on Saturday evening in St. Paul’s Hall. In tho absence of the president, Dr. W. H. Horton, Major T. P. Halpin presided. Tho chairman welcomed the guest of the evening and congratulated him on his elevation to the Cabinet. He was confident that the experience Mr. Donald had gained in his wide business career would be invaluable to the Dominion. The Minister could rest assured that while his duties took liim to every part of the country, the people of Auckland East would look after his interests in the electorate. Speeches were made by Messrs. H. R. Jenkins, M.P. for Parnell, G. C. Munns, M.P. for Roskill, and J. S. Fletcher, M.P. for Grey Lynn. Mr. H. C. Baulf, provincial organiser, was also present. Mr. Donald thanked the electors and speakers for the manner in which they had shown their appreciation to Mrs. Donald and himself. He was not making a political speech, as he was more anxious to become more acquainted personally with the people who had so loyally supported him at the election. He was grateful for the assurance of continued support for the future, and expressed surprise at the strength of the party in the electorate. He was confident that the United Party would long continue, on the Treasury Benches, and was sure that the opposing forces would also unite with the Government to place the Dominion on a sound basis. The political situation seemed to have changed throughout the world, but problems remained to be solved, both national and local. Ho looked forward with confidence to the coming session of Parliament.

During the evening a musical programme arranged by Miss Theo Halpin, interspersed with dancing, was given by the following artists: —Miss Nelson, songs; Miss Grevatt, harp solos; Miss Molly Needham, dancing: Messrs. Frank Sutherland, songs; and Rex Yates, humorous items. The dance music was supplied by Mr. Bowman's orchestra.
