MERRY DAMON AGAIN
NOVAR BEATS HOME MADE IN H.B. HURDLES COURAGEOUS AND SHORTLY SCORE (Special to THE SUN) HASTINGS, Saturday. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s winter meeting concluded today in cold but fine weather, with the going a bit improved on opening day. The attendance was good. The totalisator showed a slight decrease today, but nevertheless an increase of £696 was recorded for the meeting, the figures being £25,468 against £24,772. Havelock Hurdles In the Havelock Hurdles, Tliurnbell, a good favourite, was beaten by Jen, who is improving. Purseproud, Jen. Royal Damon and Tameterangi led through the straight with Thurnbell moving up. Jen went to the lead along the back with Royal Damon handy and Thurnbell being kicked up to his work. Thurnbell and Jen turned for hoine together, but Jen finished best and won by a length and a-half. Royal Damon was three lengths away third, and Princess Elizabeth and Atareria were next. Trial Plate Great Lady drew the rails in the Trial Plate, and, jumping out in front, was never headed, winning easily from Princess Rain, an outsider, by two lengths, with Australis third, and Austerity fourth. The contest lacked interest owing to the lack of change in the leading runners all the way. June Steeplechase The June Steeplechase was an interesting race. Sir Moment showed out early, and then Alaric and Bon Aryan became prominent. Sir Moment fell, and Alaric ran off. Young Thurnham and Brigadier Bill made a forward move along the back for the last time, and Bon Aryan was going well in a leading position when he fell two fences from home, leaving Birkbeck in charge. Birkbeck staved off Brigadier Bill, and won by three lengths. The third horse was Lieutenant Bill, six lengths away, and Y r oung Thurnham next. Hawke’s Bay Hurdles Red Bank led nearly all the way in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles, but found the distance too great. Novar had him beaten nearly two furlongs from home, and Home Made ran on into second place nearly a length behind Noval, while Peshwa and Red Bank were next. Greenhill Handicap Kickoff led to the straight in the Greenhill Handicap from Moutoa Treasury and Vesperus. A great finish resulted in Merry Damon getting up from the back to win by half a neck from Vesperus, with Moutoa Treasury a head away, third. Kickoff, Singleton and Piuthair were next. Raukawa Handicap Tunbridge led to the straight in the Raukawa Handicap with Patutahi, Bold Rront and Fine Acre prominent, but in the finish Courageous wore the leaders down and won by half a length from Fine Acre, with Bold Front half a length away, third. Tunbridge was fourth. Final Handicap There was a sensational finish in the concluding event. Shortly, a big favourite. waited on the leaders to the straight and then came through handsomely to win by a length from Sylvan Dell, who was a neck in front of Huikai. with Kaiti, the pacemaker, fourth. Apparently the placing's of the second and third horses did not meet with the approval of a section of the crowd, which demonstrated. The judge placed High Society third, and then altered it to Huikai. but this did not appease the demonstrators. Following are the results: Havelock Hurdles, of £150; li miles.— 4 .Ten. 9.5. M. Tfie Waipa Racing Club is seeking an extra day’s permit. Mr. F. Quin (president) quoted figures to show that Te Awamutu had the largest totalisator returns of any country club in the province. In 1916, when the first permit was granted, the totalisator returns totalled £IO,OOO, and for the last five years they were in the region of £25,000. He said that the Auckland District Committee had recommended the club for an extra day during the present season. Horses trained on the Waipa course had secured 5S wins this season, which had not yet concluded. Mr. A. Wallace said the club was on its feet owing to the fact that each race day had been fine. There was great risk, however, with one day’s racing, of the club becoming financially embarrassed if a wet day were encountered. Mr. de la Perrelle said racing’ was first in the hands of the District Committee and the Racing Conference. Personally he was opposed to any further permits being granted the metropolitan centres. His sympathies were with country clubs. If the Racing Conference recommended a metropolitan club for a floating permit, he would consider exercising his right of veto. Where he considered an allocation fair, however, he "would not interfere.
