Aucklanders Rush for Banned Novel INQUIRY IN CITY SHOPS Following the announcement in yesterday's SUN that the war novel, “All Quiet On The Western Front," had been banned by the Public Library authorities, there has been an extraordinary demand for the book in city shops. THREE shops reported this morning that there had been a constant stream of inquirers for the book since last evening. “They have been coming in and ringing up the whole time,” said one assistant. There was only one shop in the city that had a supply yesterday, and before it closed last evening the stock of 25 had been sold. For weeks it will be impossible to secure copies casually, for all the shops are cabling for supplies and booking up the orders. “Our list of orders is yards long,” reported one of the biggest shops. So it seems as if Auckland is determined to have first-hand knowledge of the war book which has had the endorsement of foremost European critics. Auckland booksellers are profiting by the ban at the expense of library subscribers, but, “It’s an ill wind ”
