A' s sequel to a Caxton Hall rag, in which students raided an anti-vivisection meeting, taxicab loads of students filled the Westminster Police Court, when Norman Richardson, a dental student, was charged with assaulting Frederick Threadgold, an elderly tutor, whom he picked up and dropped on the floor.
The magistrate described the assault as offensive and unjustified, and fined Richardson £3.
Scotland Yard’s chief, Lord Byng, 5s receiving a deputation from the Anti-Vivisection Society, headed by the Earl of Tankerville, alleging inadequate police protection at the Caxton Hall meeting, where 200 medical students created a state of pandemonium. The chairman. Dr. W. R. Hadwen, a noted anti-vivisectionist, was shouted .down. Singing and free fights marked the proceedings until the interrupters were thrown out. Some of the students were taken to the nearest police station, and the meeting was closed without any speeches being delivered. At the end women were screaming among wrecked chairs. The police cleared the street outside the liall and the students marched off to Trafalgar Square. They ended the evening by dancing for half an hour in Piccadilly Circus with straws in their hair.
