An interesting report on the soft 1 turnip trials carried out at the Tara- : naki Agricultural Society’s Katere I experimental farm has been made by Mr. J. M. Smith, the officer in charge. On December 1, 20 varieties of turnips were sown on an area of an acre, that had been cleared of gorse and fern aDd j ploughed and disced in September, I and left to fallow till November, when lit was tyne harrowed. The area was divided into three parts. On one strip the turnips were sown with a phoßj phatic manure consisting of three I 1 parts super, one part blood and bone, and one part Nauru phosphate a: the rate of scwt to the acre. On the other strips the same mixture was used with I the addition in one case of 2cwt of 30 per cent, potash, and in the other of | lcwt of sulphate of ammonia to the acre. The average yields were 45 tons Bcwt, 43tons 16cwt, and 45 tons Bcwt, thus showing no advantage from using either potash or sulphate of ammonia. Hardy Green Globe gave the best . yield, viz., 57 tons 12cwt.
