KING COUNTRY JOTTINGS
Surprise parties at Matiere gave pleasure to a considerable number of guests. At the residence of Mrs. M. A. Margen a merry time was spent, principally in dancing. Mrs. E. Noice and Messrs. N. Dillimore, J. Ross and D. Margan supplied the music, and a delicious supper was dispensed at a late hour. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, of Niho Niho, were “raided” during the week, dancing, music, vocal items and cards making the complement of a delightful programme. * * * At the residence of' Mrs. Crocker, Kaitieke, an enjoyable event in the form of a “handkerchief evening” was given to Miss Marian Inverarity, an enthusiastic member of the Basketball Club, who is leaving the locality. Games, competitions and contributed items made the time pass pleasantly. Miss Crocker, the club’s secretary, referred to the guest’s departure and association with the club, and asked her to accept their small gifts as a token of the .great esteem in which they held her. The various competitions were won as follow: Observation competition, Mrs. W. Edwards; motorcar family, Mrs. J. IT. Waldegrave; syllable competition, Mr. Harfont. * * * A well-attended euchre tournament was held in Taumarunui, with the following results: Women’s prize (donated by the Taumarunui Hardware Company, Ltd.), won by Mrs. D. The gathering was attended by a nearly full muster of the club, despite the prevalence of sickness in the district. Blue and gold, the club’s colours, were charmingly used as the motif in a decorative scheme for the Raurimu Hall on the occasion of the local Basketball Club’s annual ball. In addition to a large gathering of local and nearby residents, a big contingent was present from the Chateau Tongariro. The music was supplied by the Merry Three, augmented with extras generously given by Miss Zachariah and Miss Couper. The duties of M.C. were weH placed in the hands of Mr. , - McNamara. A well-attended dance organised by the pupils of the Taumarunui District High School took place in the Foresters’ Hall. The event had been well arranged, and with Mr. B. Harker as M.C., the proceedings went merrily. The Star Orchestra supplied the music, with extras from Miss O’Brien and Mr. McMinn. • * • At the monthly meeting of the Taumarunui Plunket Society, over which Mrs. King presided, the nurse’s monthly report showed that 262 visits had been paid to the office, and 124 visits to homes. Whooping cough and mild cases of other ailments were still prevalent and one case of scarlet fever had been reported from an out-dis-trict. Generally the health of the infants was good. The meeting accepted with regret Nurse Butler’s intimation that she would be resigning her position with the branch.
