TIVOLI AND EVERYBODY’S

“THE SHAKEDOWN” Occasionally there comes to the screen an unheralded picture that proves to be a knockout. Such a picture is “The Shakedown,” now showing at the Tivoli and Everybody’s Theatres. The leading roles in the production are entrusted to two of the screen’s most promising youngsters, James Murray and Barbara Kent.

Telling a stirring story of the oil fields and prize ring, “The Shakedown” has for its theme the age-old ruse of unscrupulous promoters of faked fights staged for the express intention of collecting bets. Murray portrays the role of the come-on man

for a group of .ring promoters who are W'orking the faked fight racket in small communities. Sent into an oil town with instructions to get a job, make friends and pave the way for his next faked light with Battling Roff, a professional light heavy-weight, Murray meets the girl, played by Miss Kent, and a nine-year-old street waif, played by Jack Hanlon, and, because of their love for him, decides to forsake his old racket for a life more honourable. The British International Picture, “\\ idecombe Fair,” was also screened at both theatres, and met with the warmest approval from everybody. Released by Cinema Art Films, this picture was produced by Director Norman Walker and is an excellent example of Britain’s production progress.
