A try to Marist by Hickey came from a scrambling rush. There was a good deal of hard play until time which came with the score: Marist 11 Richmond 9 City v. Ellerslie Play was eevn and Avilling from the start on the Ellerslie football grounds. No score was made in the first halfhour, though good combination on both sides in attack and defence made the game interesting. The Crewther brothers did good work for Ellerslie in a fine run right to the goal, only to be robbed of their opportunity at the critical place. Shortly afterwards McLaughlin carried the bail past six Ellerslie men and passed to G. Perry for a try as he was tackled by Dufty right on the line. Barchard converted. The play ran up and down until Barchard found a hole through the Ellerslie men to score and convert. Ellerslie retaliated with a brililant run by Oliffe, who passed to Johnson who ran out near the line after they had gained nearly fifty yards. Ellerslie kept pressing the City defence. Fumbling and wild passing spoilt several good chances. After half-time fullback Dufty’s penalty kick put the local men well into City territory. After a quarter of an hour the visitors’ willing forward work took play right down to Ellerslie’s line and only a spirited defence stopped two or three apparently sure scores. Ellerslie recovered their lost ground momentarily by a series of deep kicks, but the ball was soon back in the local twentyfive; Tooman cleared well from a passing rush by City’s threequarter line, and the game remained even to the end. The final score was: City 10 Ellerslie 0 l Mr. P- Rogers wa? the refers.
