Birkbeck made the early running, and when half the journey was covered, he was followed closely by Crishna, Sir Moment, Alaric and Woden, with Aurora Borealis lying handy. Aurora Borealis moved up along the back and joined Birkbeck in the lead, eventLially accompanying him to the last fence and outstaying him to win by two lengths. Sir Moment ran a very fair race in third place, and Alaric, Ponjola and Crishna -were next. Mandarin pulled up. Mountain Crag jumped badly and Spirella tailed off. Atereria moved up smartly and, along the back, took the lead, Raukaponga having dropped back. Atereria definitely took charge half a mile from home, and went on to win very easily from Abisogne by six lengths, with Jen a fair third, and Grand National and Peshwa next. Nukumai fell at the second fence on the double, and Royal Elm, Bendower and Young Thurnliam were left in charge. Young Thurnham hit the fence half a mile from home, but under pressure came again and took the last fence on terms with Royal Elm. In a great finish Royal Elm won by a head from Young Thurnham .while Matu was third, four lengths away, and Rangi Sarto was fourth. Ballyfarnon badly injured a fetlock, and Rangi Sarto pulled up very groggy. W. J. Bowden’s fall with Nukumai looked to be a particularly bad one.
