“FIRST THINGS FIRST”

MR. ATMORE EXPLAINS MESSAGE SENT TO BOARD Press -Association NELSON, Thursday. The Minister of Education has made the following statement in reply to the chairman of the Wellington Education Board: “I received a telegram from the secretary of the board intimating that the board was dealing with the appointment of a vice-principal at the Wellington Training College and asking me for a reply. The secretary also stated that the board profoundly regretted the earthquake damage in Nelson city. I replied thanking the board for its kindly message and intimating that 1 would deal with the questions referred to immediately upon my return. “in view of the fact that the message from the secretary showed quite clearly that the board was cognisant of the reason for my departure from Wellington, which was rather hurried, I think the attitude of the chairman is inexplicable,” said Mr. Atmore. “Apparently he fails to recognise the distress caused by the recent earthquake as sufficient reason for postponing what is relatively a small matter. It is difficult to understand his state of mind. I believe in first things first, hence my attention to matters here and later attention to the minor question.”
