EIGHTEENTH FAILURE

ENGINEERING CONFERENCE ABORTIVE BRITISH WORKERS’ WAGES (Australian and TS.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Thursday. A conference between the employers and workers in the engineering trade broke down last evening. It had been held to discuss an application by the men for an increase of Ss a week for time workers. The present wage of those workers is £3 a week. A corresponding increase for piece rates was sought. The men’s executive is to meet on Tuesday to consider the position. The employers asked for an adjournment of the matter until the end of the year on the ground that they did not know what new burdens the Labour Government would impose on the industry. The representatives of the trades union .would not agree. They pointed out that the conference was the 18th that had been held without result.
