CHARGE AGAINST POLICE
STICK USED AND PISTOL BRANDISHED COALFIELDS TROUBLE Reed. 9.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. A combined meeting of unions at Kurri Karri decided to suspend picketing at Richmond main colliery. The night picket at Athebburn made allegations against the police sergeant and' members of the picket. It was alleged that the officer, while apparently under the influence of drink, struck a picket with a stick, waved his revolver, and threatened to shoot the picket if he retaliated. Inspector Stein, who is in charge on the coalfields, stated that owing to the long watches and work to which the police were not accustomed one man apparently suffered a nervous breakdown. COAL FROM ENGLAND (United Service) Reed. 11.25 a.m. LONDON, Thurs. The “Daily Herald” understands that the latest Australian shipments of Northumberland steam coal, aggregating 22,000 tons, are destined for private companies. The colliers hope to gain a permanent footing on the Australian market. Welsh collieries report having received several inquiries direct from Australia asking them to state the descriptions and quantities available, and the periods over which they are prepared to supply. Similar New Zealand inquiries were without result, owing to the prohibitive freights.
