FIT OF TEMPER
FRACTIOUS WOMAN IN TRAM FINED £5 FOR ASSAULT A fit of bad temper was held by Sub-Inspector McCarthy to be responsible for the behaviour of Martha Tucker, who was charged at the Police Court this morning on two charges of assault and one of failing to pay a tram fare. T>UCKER pleaded guilty to assaultIng Sergeant Culloty and evading payment of her child’s tram fare. She denied, however, that she had assaulted Patrick Joseph Murphy, a tram inspector. Inspector Murphy said that on May 20 he had boarded an inward Onehunga tram at Ranfurly Road. He had asked defendant for her child's ticket, and she had said that she had not got one and would not pay. "She told me to go to ” added witness. Tucker: Oh, I never used those words! Witness said that the woman had knocked his cap off and his book out of his hand. She had treated Sergeant Culloty worse than that and had lost her head altogether. Tucker admitted to the sub-inspec-tor that she had been up before on a charge of obscene language when she had been given a chance. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: If you do not control your temper you will be doing a week up above. It is unfortunate for your husband that he always has to pay to keep you out. The magistrate imposed a fine of £5, in default 14 days’ imprisonment.
