BABY GIRL’S DEATH
MOTORIST CHARGED WITH NEGLIGENCE COMMITTED FOR TRIAL (From Our Oxen Correspondent) KAITAIA, Today. There concluded at the Kaitaia Court yesterday afternoon, after a two-day sitting, the combined inquest and magisterial hearing of the circumstances attending the death of Aline Regina Wood, the baby girl who died as the result of a motor collision near Kaitaia, on June 5. James Kirby, of Auckland, the driver of one of the cars concerned, was charged w'ith negligently driving a car, thereby causing the death of the child. The coroner, Mr. L. A. McIntosh, and Messrs. J. H. Bedggood and J. Brigham, J.P.’s, were on the bench.
Detective Robertson, Whangarei, conducted the case for the police; Mr. H. P. Richmond, Auckland, appeared for Kirby, and Mr. A, Logan, of Kaitaia, held a watching brief for Mr. Packard, the driver of the other car. Much of the evidence given -was of a technical nature, and 16 "witnesses were called.
The coroner found that the child was killed as the result of a collision between a car driven by Kirby and a car driven by Frank Packard, and that the cause of death was a fracture of the cervical vertebrae. The coroner said he would speak to the local body concerned regarding the alleged obstructions to visibility on the corner where the accident occurred.
To the charge of negligence accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed in one surety of £IOO.
