Championship Soccer
SECOND ROUND CONTINUES An Attractive Programme TWO close contests should be witnessed at Blandford Park tomorrow, when Onehmiga meets Thistle in the preliminary game, and Celtic plays Y.M.C.A. in the subsequent match. Both Scottish teams are fighting hard to avoid relegation and some lively Soccer should be witnessed. Ponsonby travels to Devonport to play Shore, and extremes meet with Tramways at the top of the ladder matched with Belmont at the foot.
After its improved form last week, when Y.M. went down by a four-goal margin, Onehunga is hopeful of taking two points from Thistle tomorrow, especially as the Scots ranks are reported to be depleted through sickness and injuries in last week’s gruelling game. The Thistle men, however, never play harder than when they have their backs to the wall and they are now making a desperate attempt to climb out of the danger zone at the two bottom rungs of the ladder. Celtic is also showing much better form as the season progresses, and after putting Ponsonby out of the Chatham Cup and beating Shore pointless last Saturday, the Celts are confident of getting their revenge tomorrow for the beating Young Men gave them in the first round game. Ponsonby is still running close behind the Trams for the championship laurels, and has to journey to Devonport again. The Ponies will need to better last week’s form against Belmont to be sure of collecting ftjll points from Shore. But the home club is finding it difficult to keep its senior eleven together and Ponies should prove too strong for them. Tramways should have no difficulty in continuing its victorious career in the match with Belmont. In the senior B championship the
following matches will be played:— • Philomel v. Tamaki, at the Dock: Metro v. Hangers, at Cornwall Park; j Newmarket, v. Corinthians, at the Do- j main; Northcote v. JUNIOR NOTES The following are the corrected positions of the clubs in the senior B championship, and there should be an exciting finish for the first winner of the Skerrett Memorial Cup. The runnerup will gain promotion to senior A rank, and competition will be keen to the end for the top places, while the club at the bottom may find itself relegated to the second grade when entries come up for consideration next season.
THIRD GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP The third grade open competition is providing a great race for championship honours between the three northern suburbs in the outer area. Swanson is so far undefeated, while Henderson and New Lynn have each lost one game. Swanson and Henderson are running neck and neck for the
lend, while New Lynn, with two fewer games played than Henderson, is in a position to run up level when the first round finishes. The positions of the clubs are:-
The Dacre Memorial Cup knockouts will soon be in full swing among entrants from the second and third grades, and the cup ties will form an interesting basis for comparing the respective standards of the clubs in the two grades. It will not be surprising if tlrra top-notchers in the third open grade succeed in knocking out some of the second graders, and some willing bouts will be witnessed in the opening rounds. There is also general gratification at the decision of the Control Board to play a match between local junior representatives and the Waikato representatives of the same grade as the curtain-raiser to the big game for the F.A. trophy between Auckland and Wellington on July 20. The Junior Division Committee is now keeping a watchful eye on possibles and probables for rep. honours, and there will be keen competition for places in the eleven. A.F.A. HANDBOOK
The familiar “Official Handbook” has again been published, and the 1929 edition has been compiled by the enthusiasts, Messrs. L. J. Check and E. V. Roberts, and it is the usual vade mecuni of official information and records. In view of the important changes in the constitution, rules and by-laws of the Auckland Football Association, the latest handbook should be in the hands of every player and club official, and at the modest price of sixpence it is exceptional value for the njpney. The laws of the game, with the latest additions. are printed in full, and the draw for the season right through the grades and school competitions is given in extended form, with ruled columns for the purpose of keeping a detailed record of results. There is also a useful directory giving names and addresses of all club secretaries and registered referees. SOUTH AUCKLAND MEETING OF EXECUTIVE (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Thursday. A meeting of the Management Committee of the South Auckland Football Association was held last evening, Mr. J. Baillie presiding. The action of the emergency committee in offering North Auckland July 13 as the date for the Brown Shield challenge match was confirmed, and the Huntly district clubs are to be asked if the recreation ground at Huntly will be available on that date. Huntly Thistle entered for the Chatham Cup and will be the South Auckland representatives for the competition. * The Manawatu Association offered £25 toward the expenses of a South Auckland team to play for the Brown Shield at Palmerston North. The association is to be advised that the invitation will be favourably considered if South Auckland retains the shield after the North Auckland and Hawke’s Bay challenges have been decided. Fixtures for Saturday are: Pukemiro v. Pukemiro Junction, Huntly Thistle v. Claudelands Rovers, Hamilton Wanderers v. Huntly, Glen Massey a bye.
