ATHLETES’ VISIT

CANADIANS IN NEW ZEALAND PROVISIONAL ITINERARY Auckland seems certain to be the starting-off place for the two Canadian athletes who will tour* New Zealand next ’ athletic esason. pERCY WILLIAMS, the sensational young - sprinter, will, of course, be the visitor on whom most attention will rest. Williams is a lithe type, with a surprisingly rapid starting jump. So far, New Zealand has no runner who can approach Williams to even a moderate degree. But, by the time the Canadians arrive in midJanuary, the Maoriland season will be advanced to the most suitable degree, and there should be good talent offer-

Williams is Olympic champion over 100 and 220 yards. Accompanying him will be Edwards, the half-mile and mile performer, or Ball, who is essentially a distance man. New Zealand will acquit itself favourably in the distance events. Auckland, with the opportunity of meeting the Canadians first-hand, will probably inflict a severe jolt with J. W. Savidan

leading the team. Further South, there will be solid distance men, but the drop of Randolph Rose has left a big gap. A provisional itinerary for the tour gives these dates: Auckland, January IS; meet New’ Zealand Council, Wellington, January 20: Napier, January 21; Gisborne, January 25; Haw era, January 29; Wanganui, February 1; Masterton, February 5; Wellington, February 8; Christchurch. February 12; Dunedin or Invercargill, February 15; Christchurch, February 22; Canterbury Centre, February 26; Wellington, March I; visit Rotorua, March 5; Auckland, March 8. By the time the visitors race again at Auckland at the end of the tour, they will be . well grounded in New Zealand conditions. .
