ASCOT GOLD CUP
INVERSHIN’S GOOD WIN REIGH COUNT SECOND (United B.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) LONDON, Thursday. The Royal Ascot meeting was continued today. The biggest event of the fixture was the meeting of the American horse, Reigh Count, with England’s best handicappers in the historic Ascot Gold Cup. The seven-year-old Invershin, who won several good handicaps the last couple of seasons, was too good for the invader, whom he defeated by a couple of lengths, with the French horse Palais Royal II three lengths away in third berth. The result of the contest could thus be shown: England 1 America 2 France 3 The weights to be carried were as follow:—Three-year-olds 7.7, four 9.0, older horses 9.4, with 31b allowance for maidens. The following is the result of this historic race: GOLD CUP A cup value £SOO, added to a sweepstakes of £2O each, with £2,500 added for the winner, £7OO for the second and £3OO for the third. For entire colts and fillies. To start at the Cup post and go once round; 2h miles. Closed December 18, 1928, with 54 entries. INVERSHIN (Reid Walker), b h, by Invincible—Ajantia, 7yrs, 9.4 .... 1 REIGI-I COUNT (Mrs. J. Hertz), ch h, by Sunreigh—Contessina, 4yrs, 9.0 2 PALAIS ROYAL II (M. J. Wittouek), ch h, by Bruleur —Puntarenas, 4yrs, 9.0 3 There were 13 starters. Won by two lengths, third horse three lengths away. None of the leading three-year-olds were entered for the Gold Cup. In fact, there were only three of that age nominated. So the American invasion of the English turf so far this season has ended in failure. A British Official Wireless message says that in the race for the Gold Cup, of the 13 starters four were French horses and one was Reigh Count, an American horse belonging to Mrs. Hertz, which has done big things in America. The British horse, Invershin, owned by Mr. Reid Walker, triumphed decisively, however, winning by two lengths from Reigh Count, with M. Wittouck’s Ralais Royal II third.
