THE MIGHTY WRACKLER
GREAT THREE-YEAR-OLD REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT The performances of Daphne de Oro last year stamped her as one of the best three-year-olds ever produced in the Dominion, but even the splendid record of the Rey de Oro filly has been overshadowed this season by the remarkable achievements of the Ashburton youngster Wrackler. Wrackler was bred by the Ashburton light-harness enthusiast, Mr. H. F. Nicoll, whose interest in the 'popular pastime has done a great deal toward its progress and advancement in the Dominion. As a breeder, imbued with the ideal of improving the standard of trotters and pacers, Mr. Nicoll has done splendid work, while the able manner in which the sport generally is controlled by the New Zealand Trotting Association under his able directorship, is a further tribute to the Ashburton sportsman’s efforts to raise the game to a high pedestal. The Iron Horse Wrackler is a son of the American sire Wrack, known as the “irdn horse” in the land of his birth, and Trix j ointer, a fine mare of rare quality, displaying both speed and stamina. Trix Pointer, who is a daughter of hemoniti—Bally Pointer, won the New Zealand Cup of 1919, and the Free for All in 1.922. and has a mile record of 2.7 3-5. With such high-class parentage, it is not surprising to find Wrackler turning out a real champion, and although only a. three-year-old, Mr. Nicoll’s gelding has early proved that he inherits the great racing characteristics of his ancestors, while he has also displayed the Wrack “iron” constitution. Last season in his first public essay under silk, at Ashburton, Wrackler finished tttird to Delightful and Loiterer over 12 furlongs, and created a sensation by establishing an Australasian record for the- journey for two-year-olds, 3.29 4-5, which was reduced recently at Ashburton by John Jinks,
Real Huon and Ngingo Ngingo, placegetters in the Sapling Stakes. In his only other start last year, the two-year-old classic, Wrtickler again filled third berth. Dual Derby Winner This season Wrackler opened his three-year-old account in September at the Ashburton Racing Club’s meeting, where he annexed a mile and aquarter heat in good style, which proved a valuable test for his Derby prospects. Then followed his Great Northern Derby victory, at the Auckland spring fixture, and on the second day lie opened the eyes of the trotting public by running Sunfish to halt a head over two miles, registering 4.36 2-5 for the journey. His next appearance was in the New Zealand Derby, which the son of Wrack won in excellent style.
Since then Mr. v Nicoll's crack-a-jack youngster has won over various distances, putting up some remarkable performances, and recently at Ashburton Wrackler set the seal on his three-year-old career by registering 4.29 1-5 (an Australasian record) for two miles when acting as runner-up to Lingfield. Wrackler will be seen in action at the Park during the winter fixture, and in whatever events he tackles, is sure to be well fancied. Wrackler is a real genuine pacer and promises to get into the first flight of New Zealand pacers before he is much older.
