STRAND
“THE CANARY MURDER CASE” The exciting 1 “all-talkie” production by Paramount, “The Canary Murder Case,” continues to thrill the audiences at the Strand Theatre. Adapted from the fascinating story by S. S. Van Dine, one of the most popular writers of mystery stories in America, the film is interpreted by a strong cast headed by William Powe 11, James Hall, Louise Brooks and Jean Arthur, and including Gustav Von Seyffertitz, Charles Lane, Lawrence urant and E. H. Calvert. The story concerns the mysterious death of Margaret Odell, known as “The Canary,” one of the most notorious of the many beautiful women on Broadway, who is found strangled in her apartment. Philco Vance, a well-known amateur detective, is asked to handle the case, and the manner in which he solves the mystery of the identity of the murderer, who has left no perceptible trace, makes an enticing theme for the film. The short talkie features on the remainder of the programme include another interesting Fox Movietone News, and the first British talkies to be heard in New Zealand. There are scenes and sounds of the impressive ceremony at the London Cenotaph last Armistice Day, and a comedy entitled “Smith Wakes Up.”
