A heavy north-west gale, accompanied by rain squalls and several light earthquake shocks. were experienced throughout the distric t between 5 p.m. yesterday and midnight, causing interruptions to electric and telephone services. Property in Hawera is undamaged, beyond the wreckage of fences and a number of outbuildings and shop skylights. More extensive damage was suffered in Opunake, where two shops windows were blown into the street, lights wrecked, the telephone-line cut by flying iron from a shop verandah and a. house verandah lilted bodily and scattered in pieces. Several outbuildings of houses were demolished, and a number of electric light poles fell, bringing down the wires.
