The first cricket test between England and South Africa was drawn. j A dramatic resumption was made today, Quinn bowling Killiek with the i fifth ball of the first over. Thereafter Sutcliffe and Hammond settled down. Runs came slowly at first, but later both gave glimpses of their real form scoring 50 in 25 minutes. Hammond’s century made his fifth test hundred. The second-wicket partnership yielded 221 in 170 minutes, nine short of the record. White declared the innings closed, leaving the Africans to make 304 in three hours. The 100 appeared iu 85 minutes. Catterall was brilliant all round the wicket. His score included 10 fours. Catterall and Mitchell made an outstanding achievement. Middlesex.—Lancashire in its first innings made 241 (EL Tyldesley 102, and Allen taking ten wickets for 40), and in its second, 310 for nine wickets, declared (liopwood 106). Middlesex in its first innings made 228 (Lee 124), and in its second 170 for five wickets (Lee 105, and Watson taking four wickets for 37). Lancashire won on the first innings. Essex v. Surrey.—Essex in its first innings made 349 (O’Connor 151, Nichols 96), and in its second 215 for seven wickets, declared. Shepherd took four wickets for 76. Surrey in its first innings made 158 (Sandham 73, and Nichols taking five for 35), and in its second 261 for three wickets (Shepherd, not out, 73). Essex won on the first innings. Sussex v. Glamorgan.—Sussex in its first innings made 306 (Bowley 130, and Davies taking five for 26), and in its second 147 (Mercer taking five for 77 and Davies four for 35). Glamorgan in its first innings made 101 (Wensley taking five for 49 and James four for 25). Glamorgan followed on for 408 (Morgan, not out, 91). Glamorgan won by 06 runs. Gloucester v. Leicester.—Gloucester in its first innings made 201 (Lyon 132), and in its second 151 (Geary taking four for 43). Leicester in its first innings made 270 (Berry 102, and Goddard taking five for 95), and in its second 83 for two wickets. Leicester won by eight wickets. Nottingham v. Yorkshire.—Nottingham in its first innings made 157 (Rhodes four for 47), and in its second 144 (Rhodes taking seven for 38). Yorkshire in its first innings made 205 (A. Staples taking six for 60), and in its second 99 for five wickets. Yorkshire won by five wickets. Oxford v.
