MENACED BY EARTH - BLOCKED RIVERS.—Land slips, which came down in the Matakitaki River Valley (at the foot of the hills seen in the distance) engulfed many homes and killed ten people. The river is backing up against huge slips and, if they break, Murchison may be overwhelmed. Nearly all the inhabitants have been transferred to Nelson.
