PETROL TAX FUNDS
HIGHWAYS BOARD CAREFUL ONEHUNGA ADMINISTRATION A close scrutiny is apparently being exercised by the Main Highway’s Board on the expenditure by local bodies of the amount of the petrol tax allotted them. In a letter to the Onehunga Borough Council read at its meeting last evening, the board’s Auckland representative. Mr. F. S. Dyson. requested the council to furnish him with a statement showing how the various amounts paid had been disbursed and that an ! inspection of the council’s books would i be made to see that the provisions of ! the Act were being complied with. Tintown clerk was authorised to supply » the necessary details. The town clerk was instructed to take the necessary steps for a poll of the ratepayers in the area recently taken over from the One Tree Hill Road Board, on the question of raising a special loan for drainage and watermains. ! A suggestion by the medical officer of health that samples of milk retailed in the borough should be collected and submitted for analysis was not adopted The sanitary inspe* - Jt was instructed to take the ne< % sary steps to have certain Chinese dwellings in Neil- i son Street connected to the drainage j system. The Mayor, Mr. E. Morton, and the 1 chairman of the Works Committee, Cr. 1 T. PI. Geraglity. were authorised to consult with Mr. A. Greville Walker in an advisory capacity as to the most efficient method of carrying out the engineering supervision of borough works. The resignation of the foreman of works. Mr. C H. Bridge, was accepted, and Mr. J. Williams was appointed to fill the vacancy. Applications for anI other foreman are to be called for. ! A request by the Te Papa pa Rate- { payers’ Association for better foot--1 paths, roads and lighting was referred ! to the Works Committee. The medical officer of public health
reported that the bacteriological examination of the borough’s water supplyhad proved satisfactory. The Transport Board notified that it would take no further action in providing a tram stop at Rose Road until the local bodies concerned had reached unanimity. Tenders were received from the foi- : lowing firms for the removal of house- ! hold refuse:—H. Bray and Co., £741 j a year, or £l4 5s a week: McCarten i Bros.. £568 19s 4d a year, or £lO 18s I lOd a week: E. R. Smith. £550 a year: I CJ. B. Bid w ood. £23 10s a week ; E. O. , Zanders. £SOB a year. The tender of .Mr. Zanders was accepted. G. H. Hunt and Sons* tender of £9 was accepted for installing electric light in the Blockhouse Building. Jellicoe Park. It was decided to ask the Transport j Board to consider applications for em - ; ployment from such of the borough's. • employees who had recently been retrenched. The Finance Committee was ap--1 pointed to interview the Auckland Electric-Power Board with a view' to securing a rebate on the charges made for electric current. It was pointed out that the borough’s annual expenditure under this heading amounted to £5.000
