RIALTO AND REGENT, EPSOM
“THE BELLAMY TRIAL” The silent version of the fine him, “The Bellamy Trial,” is now at the Rialto and Regent, Epsom, Theatres. The film opens as an ordinary news reel, with scenes of a house in which a murder has been committed. Then come scenes of the exterior of the courthouse where the trial is being held, and it is not until the interior of this building is shown that the audience realises that the principal picture of the programme has started. From this point the picture is the evidence which is produced at the trial, and. as each witness steps into the box. the scene fades from that of the courthouse to what is being described. The prisoners are Sue Ives and a man named Bellamy, who are being tried for the murder of Bellamy's wife. The web of circumstantial evidence i« drawn round the two accused, although there are several clever incidents in the picture which lead the audience to place the blame on half a dozen persons. Beatrice Joy heads the cast of the film, and other players are Kenneth Thompson and Margaret Livingstone. Entertaining supports have been arranged for both theatres. LECTURE AT UNIVERSITY The second university lecture of tli* series dealing with the life of Shakespeare's times will be delivered in the College Hall this evening. Mr. H. R. Rodwell will lecture on “Life and Labour in Elizabethan Times.” The public is invited to attend. William Powell. the we 1-known Paramount player, who has the ro!<» of Philo Vance in the Paramount alltalking picture, “The Canary Murder Case,” possesses one of the finest speaking voices of any motion picture artist in Hollywood.
